Breast Cancer

What is cancer?

Cancer happens when some of our body’s cells start behaving badly, growing and dividing out of control. Breast cancer is when this trouble starts in the breast. Most times, it begins in the milk-making glands (lobules) or the ducts (the “pipes” that carry milk to the nipple).

Breast cancer myths & dangers?

  • Myth 1: keeping money in bras no, keeping coins or cash in your bra doesn’t cause cancer. But it can irritate your skin, so just avoid it!
  • Myth 2: breast cancer can’t be treated wrong! The earlier you detect it, the better your chances of getting effective treatment.

When left unchecked, breast cancer can spread to places like your liver or bones, making you feel extremely tired, weak, or breathless.

What causes breast cancer?

Breast cancer doesn’t have one specific cause, but here are some risk factors:

  • Age: it’s more common after 55.
  • Family history: if your mom, auntie, or sister had it, your risk is higher.
  • Lifestyle: smoking, heavy alcohol use, and lack of exercise don’t help.
  • Reproductive factors: late childbirth or never having children can increase your risk.

Prevention & treatment?

  • Prevention:
  • Eat healthy foods like kontomire and fish.
  • Exercise regularly (even dancing counts!).
  • Avoid smoking and limit alcohol.

Screening:

  • Regular mammograms after age 40.
  • Self-breast exams to check for lumps or changes.

Treatment:

  • Options include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Early detection saves lives, so don’t wait to visit your doctor if you feel anything unusual.
