Bug Bites

What are bug bites?

Insects like mosquitoes, bees, ants, and even spiders can bite or sting when they feel threatened or hungry. Most times, the bite is just annoying – itching, swelling, or a red bump. But for some, bug bites can be more serious, especially if you’re allergic to their venom or if they carry diseases like malaria or yellow fever.

Common bug bites?

  • Mosquito bites: They leave small, itchy bumps that grow red and swollen.
  • Fire ants (kakape): They sting, burn, and leave blisters. You might itch for days!
  • Bedbugs: These little pests leave itchy rashes, mostly where clothing doesn’t cover.
  • Scorpions: Their sting can be serious, especially for kids. It causes pain, numbness, and in some cases, breathing problems.
  • Scabies mites: Their bites create intense itching and rashes that take weeks to appear.
  • Bee & wasp stings: Pain, redness, and a white spot where the sting went in.

How to treat bug bites?

  • Step 1: Remove the stinger (if there’s one left behind).
  • Step 2: Wash the area with soap and water.
  • Step 3: Apply ice to reduce swelling and pain.
  • Step 4: For itching, use anti-itch cream or a baking soda paste.
  • Step 5: If things get serious, like swelling or difficulty breathing, get medical help fast.
