Chest Pain
Chest pain is one of those symptoms that can be harmless or a big warning sign. So, how do you tell the difference?
Why does your chest hurt?
Not all chest pain comes from the heart. Here are some possible reasons:
Heart problems (serious)
- Heart attack: Blocked blood flow to the heart (pain may spread to your arm, back, or jaw).
- Angina: Chest pain when the heart doesn’t get enough oxygen.
- Inflammation: Conditions like pericarditis and myocarditis.
Stomach issues (not so serious, but still uncomfortable)
- Acid reflux (heartburn): That burning feeling after too much oily food.
- Gallstones: Pain in the chest and stomach, especially after eating.
Lung problems
- Pneumonia: Pain that gets worse when you breathe.
- Collapsed lung: Sudden, sharp pain.
- Asthma or bronchitis: Tightness in the chest.
Muscle and bone Issues
- Pulled muscles: From lifting heavy things.
- Broken ribs: If you’ve had a recent injury.
When should you worry?
- Pain that spreads to your arms, jaw, or back.
- Shortness of breath or dizziness.
- Sweating, nausea, or extreme fatigue.
How to protect your heart?
- Eat healthy (less salt, less fat).
- Exercise (even a 30-minute walk helps).
- Avoid stress
- Don’t ignore chest pain
