Deafness

What’s deafness or hearing Loss?

Deafness or hearing loss is when you can’t hear sounds clearly or at all. It can happen gradually over time, so you might not notice it right away. Your outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear work together to pick up sound, but if one part isn’t working well, your hearing can be affected.

How does hearing work?

  • Outer ear: Collects sound like a satellite dish.
  • Middle ear: Has tiny bones (hammer, anvil, stirrup) that pass the sound along.
  • Inner ear: Sends the sound to your brain for processing.

What causes hearing loss?

There are a few main causes of hearing loss:

  • Conductive hearing loss: This happens when something blocks sound from reaching your eardrum (like earwax or infections). But the good news is usually not permanent!
  • Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL): This is when the inner ear or nerves are damaged. Unfortunately, this one is often permanent.
  • Mixed Hearing Loss: Both types of hearing loss happening at the same time!

Symptoms of deafness?

  • Difficulty hearing in one or both ears
  • Struggling to hear even loud sounds
  • Ringing or buzzing in your ears

Can it be treated?

  • Clean out wax (but don’t poke your ears with sticks)
  • Use hearing aids if needed.
  • Get ear infections treated early.

How to prevent hearing loss?

  • Protect your ears. Wear earplugs around loud sounds whether it’s music, machines, or drums at a party.
  • Regular ear checkups are key, don’t ignore ear infections.
