Diarrhoea
What is diarrhoea?
- It’s when you keep passing loose, watery stools multiple times a day
- Can be mild (lasts 1-2 days) or chronic (more than 3-4 weeks!)
- It happens when your body tries to flush out something bad like germs, spoiled food, or a stomach bug.
Causes of diarrhoea?
- Germs: Viruses (like rotavirus), bacteria (Salmonella, E. coli), and parasites
- Food intolerance: Some people struggle with milk (lactose intolerance)
- Bad water or contaminated food
- Certain medications – Some antibiotics can upset your gut
Symptoms?
- Stomach cramps and bloating
- Frequent watery stool
- Feeling weak and dizzy
- Nausea and vomiting
- Dehydration (dry mouth, headache, light-headedness)
How do doctors know what’s causing your diarrhoea?
- Asking questions: What did you eat? How long has it lasted?
- Blood and urine tests: To check for infections.
- Stool test: To find bacteria or parasites.
- Food tests: To see if certain foods are the problem.
- Scans and camera check: For serious cases.
How to stop it?
- Drink plenty of fluids (ORS, coconut water, or light soup)
- Avoid dairy & greasy foods while recovering
- See a doctor if it lasts too long or you feel weak
Prevention?
- Wash hands before eating and after using the toilet
- Drink clean water (boil or use bottled water if unsure)
- Be careful with street food (especially in dusty areas!)
- Refrigerate leftovers properly
