What is drug addiction?
Drug addiction (or substance use disorder) is when a person can’t stop using a drug, even though they know it’s messing up their life. This could be alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana (wee), or stronger stuff like tramadol, heroin, or cocaine.
Who is at risk?
- People with family history of addiction
- Those dealing with trauma and stress
- Youth experimenting for fun
- Mental health struggles
Common addictive substances?
- Depressants (slows you down): Alcohol, heroin
- Stimulants (speeds you up): Cocaine, tramadol, meth
- Club drugs (party highs): Ecstasy, LSD, Rohypnol (also used for date rape)
- Other substances: Glue, steroids, and even painkillers!
Stages of addiction?
- Experimenting: Just trying it out.
- Regular use: Using it often.
- Dependency: You need it to feel normal.
