What is drug addiction?

Drug addiction (or substance use disorder) is when a person can’t stop using a drug, even though they know it’s messing up their life. This could be alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana (wee), or stronger stuff like tramadol, heroin, or cocaine.

Who is at risk?

  • People with family history of addiction
  • Those dealing with trauma and stress 
  • Youth experimenting for fun 
  • Mental health struggles 

Common addictive substances?

  • Depressants (slows you down): Alcohol, heroin
  • Stimulants (speeds you up): Cocaine, tramadol, meth
  • Club drugs (party highs): Ecstasy, LSD, Rohypnol (also used for date rape)
  • Other substances: Glue, steroids, and even painkillers!

Stages of addiction?

  • Experimenting: Just trying it out.
  • Regular use: Using it often. 
  • Dependency: You need it to feel normal. 
  • Addiction: You can’t stop, and it’s ruining your life.

How to stay safe?

  • Find better ways to cope with stress
  • Surround yourself with people who make good choices
  • Say no when offered drugs

  • Detox: Getting the drug out of your system (can be painful, but necessary!).
  • Counselling and therapy: Talking to professionals helps.
  • Rehabilitation centers: Places that offer medical and emotional support.
