Gout

What is gout?

Gout is caused by too much uric acid in your blood. This acid builds up in your joints, causing them to swell and feel painful.

Symptoms of gout?

  • Pain and swelling in the joints, especially in your big toe, ankles, or knees.
  • The area may feel hot to touch.
  • These attacks can last from 3 to 10 days, then disappear until the next one.

What causes it and risk factors?

  • If your body can’t get rid of excess uric acid, it builds up and causes gout.
  • You might be at higher risk if you’re a middle-aged man, drink alcohol, eat red meats, or have conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes.
  • Have family members with gout
  • Overweight
  • Dehydration

How to prevent it?

  • Limit alcohol intake and sugary drinks.
  • Avoid smoking
  • Limit foods like meat, shellfish, pork, beef and lamb.
  • Drink plenty of water to flush out excess uric acid.
  • Exercise and keep a healthy weight.
  • Maintain a balanced diet rich in vegetables and low-fat foods.

  • Your pain, where it hurts and how often
  • If your joint is swollen and red
  • Your medical history

  • Take a fluid sample from your joint to check for uric acid
