What are hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in or around your anus. Hemorrhoids are also known as piles or kookoo. There are two types:
- Internal hemorrhoids: These hide inside your rectum (the lower part of your gut).
- External hemorrhoids: These sit outside your anus and are the real troublemakers. They may cause itching, pain, and difficult sitting.
Signs you might have hemorrhoids?
- Itching and irritation around your anus (you may find yourself shifting a lot in your seat!).
- Pain when sitting or using the toilet.
- Swelling or small lumps near your anus.
- Blood in your stool (if you notice this, see a doctor).
What causes hemorrhoids?
- Straining too hard when using the toilet
- Sitting for too long, especially on the toilet
- Chronic constipation or diarrhoea.
- Pregnancy
- Lifting heavy loads regularly.
- Aging

- Starchy foods don’t cause hemorrhoids
- Dirt in your bowels is not the reason!
- Not all herbal treatments work
Treating hemorrhoids?
- Warm sitz baths: Soak your backside in warm water for relief.
- Painkillers: Paracetamol or ibuprofen can help with discomfort.
- Eat more fiber: Fruits, vegetables, and lots of water will keep things moving smoothly.
- Medical treatment: If things get serious, doctors can remove them using safe procedures.
