Indigestion

What is indigestion?

Indigestion or dyspepsia It’s when your body struggles to digest food properly, and it can be uncomfortable, especially after a heavy or spicy meal.

What causes indigestion?

Several things can lead to indigestion, like:

  • Big meals and eating too quickly
  • Spicy and fatty foods
  • Stress
  • Drinking alcohol and smoking
  • Lying down as soon as you are done eating
  • Medications like aspirin or antibiotics can also mess with your digestion.

Can indigestion cause bigger problems?

Indigestion is usually harmless, but if it keeps happening, it can:

Make eating difficult, leading to poor nutrition and cause acid reflux (GERD), which can lead to:

  • Narrowed food pipe (hard to swallow).
  • Blocked stomach exit (food doesn’t move properly).
  • Changes in the food pipe lining (risk of bigger health issues).

Symptoms of indigestion?

You might experience:

  • Stomach pain or feeling bloated
  • Heartburn
  • Nausea and even vomiting
  • Excess gas or burping
  • Burning sensation in the stomach or esophagus

If indigestion comes with severe symptoms like vomiting blood or unexplained weight loss, please see a doctor immediately.

How to handle indigestion?

Sometimes indigestion just goes away on its own, especially after you’ve rested or let your body digest that heavy meal. But if it becomes a regular thing, try these tips:

  • Eat slower and avoid stuffing yourself.
  • Avoid lying down immediately after eating
  • Cut down on alcohol and caffeine
  • Quit smoking
  • Try ginger or warm water after meals to help digestion.
