Joint Pain
What is joint pain?
Joints are the parts where your bones meet (like knees, elbows, and hips) and help you move. Joint pain is when these parts hurt, swell, or feel stiff.
What causes joint pain?
- Arthritis: The biggest culprit!
- Osteoarthritis (OA) – when the cushion (cartilage) in your joints wears out, making movement painful.
- Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) – when your immune system attacks your joints (yes, your body can betray you!).
- Sickle cell disease: In kids, sickle cell crises can reduce blood flow to the joints, causing serious pain.
- Other causes:
- Infections like mumps or hepatitis
- Gout (too much meat and alcohol can lead to this!)
- Injuries from sports or accidents
When should you see a doctor?
- If the joint is swollen, red, or warm to the touch
- If the pain lasts more than three days
- If you have a fever without flu symptoms
- If the joint is stuck or deformed
How is joint pain treated?
- At home: Rest, stretch, take a warm bath, or use pain relievers.
- Lifestyle changes: Stay active, maintain a healthy weight, and avoid too much stress on your joints.
- Medical treatment: Depending on the cause, doctors might prescribe medication, drain fluid, or in extreme cases, suggest surgery.
