New Hope for an HIV Vaccine
HIV has taken millions of African lives. For many years, scientists tried to make a vaccine but did not succeed. Now, new research gives hope.
Scientists from the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative, Moderna, and other partners are testing a new vaccine using mRNA technology. This is the same method used in COVID-19 vaccines. It works like sending a recipe to the body’s cells so they learn how to make protection.
The vaccine teaches the body’s immune cells to grow stronger. These cells can then produce special defenders called broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs). These defenders can block many types of HIV, not just one.
The first trials show the vaccine can start this process in humans, including Africans. It is not the final solution, but it is a big step forward.
For Africa, this brings hope of a future with less HIV, fewer medicines, and less stigma.
