Nosebleed
What is nosebleed?
Nosebleeds are common but rarely indicate a serious medical condition. An anterior nosebleed occurs when the blood vessels in the front of the nose break and bleed. A posterior nosebleed occurs in the back or the deepest part of the nose.
What causes one’s nose to bleed?
- Dry air: During dry seasons like harmattan, the air dries out the nasal passages, causing irritation and bleeding.
- Allergy medications: Antihistamines and decongestants can dry the nasal passages and lead to nosebleeds.
- Frequent nose blowing: Blowing your nose often can irritate the sensitive skin inside.
- Injury: A hit to the nose can cause it to bleed.
- Nose picking: Picking the nose can damage the blood vessels inside.
What can one do in case of a bleeding nose?
- Sit up: Don’t lie down. This helps keep the blood from flowing into your throat.
- Pinch your nose: Use your thumb and index finger to pinch the soft part of your nose and keep it closed for about 10 minutes.
- Lean forward: This helps stop the blood from going down your throat.
- Breathe through your mouth: Relax and breathe through your mouth while pinching your nose
When to seek help
If the bleeding lasts more than 20 minutes or happens after an injury, see a doctor.
