Seizure

What Are Seizures?

Imagine your brain as a giant communication hub, sending electrical signals to control your body. Now, picture what happens when those signals go haywire—this sudden burst of electrical activity causes a seizure! Some people shake uncontrollably, while others just blank out for a few seconds.

In Africa, many people believe seizures are caused by spirits or curses, but the truth is, they are medical conditions that can happen to anyone. The good news? They can be treated!

How common are seizures?

  • Nearly 10 million Africans live with epilepsy (a condition that causes repeated seizures).
  • Febrile seizures (caused by fever) are common in children under five.
  • Many seizures are linked to malaria, meningitis, and birth complications. Types of seizures?
  • Focal Seizures: Affect one part of the brain, may cause unusual feelings, movements, or blank staring.
  • Generalized Seizures: Affect both sides of the brain, may cause body stiffness, jerking, or loss of consciousness.
  • Unknown Seizures: When the cause isn’t clear.

Common triggers?

  • Infections: Malaria, meningitis, or HIV.
  • High fever: Often in kids.
  • Head injuries: Accidents, childbirth complications.
  • Low blood sugar: Especially in diabetics.
  • Alcohol or drug use.

What to do if someone has a seizure?

  • Stay calm and stay with them.
  • Move sharp objects away.
  • Turn them on their side.
  • Do not put anything in their mouth!
  • Do not hold them down.

If a seizure lasts more than 5 minutes, get medical help immediately!
