What is tonsillitis?
Tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsils, two small glands at the back of your throat. They help fight infections, but sometimes they get infected themselves. It’s most common in children but can affect anyone.

Tonsillitis is caused by viruses (like the common cold) or bacteria (like strep throat). It spreads through coughing, sneezing, or touching contaminated object
What are the symptoms of tonsillitis?
- Sore throat
- Pain when swallowing
- Fever and chills
- Bad breath
- Swollen tonsils (sometimes with white spots)
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
Can tonsillitis be prevented?
- Wash hands often
- Avoid close contact with sick people
How is tonsillitis diagnosed?
A doctor may:
- Check your throat
- Do a throat swab
- Perform a blood test
What is the treatment for tonsillitis?
Mild cases (viral tonsillitis):
- Rest and drink fluids
- Gargle warm salt water
- Take pain relievers
Severe cases (bacterial tonsillitis):
- Antibiotics (complete the full course)
- Tonsillectomy (if tonsillitis keeps returning)

Yes! through:
- Coughing or sneezing
- Touching contaminated objects
