Type 1 Diabetes

What is type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes happens when the body stops making insulin, the hormone that helps sugar from food enter your cells to give you energy. Without insulin, sugar stays in your blood, leading to high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) which can cause serious health problems.

Signs to watch out for?

  • Feeling thirsty all the time
  • Urinating too often
  • Losing weight even when eating plenty
  • Always tired and weak
  • Mood swings
  • Blurred vision Who can get it?
  • It usually starts in children and young adults, but anyone can get it.
  • If someone in your family has it, you might be at higher risk.
  • Cold weather and some viruses might trigger it.

Managing diabetes?

  • Take insulin
  • Eat balanced meals
  • Stay active, exercise helps your body use sugar properly.
  • Check blood sugar regularly
  • Medical checkups are a must

What happens if you ignore it?

  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia): Too much insulin, not enough food (shakiness, sweating, fainting.)
  • Ketoacidosis: If your body has no insulin, it starts burning fat for energy
  • Long-term damage: heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, infections, and even amputations.
